All companies have data – whether they are a large retailer, a financial firm, a manufacturing company or even your local dentist – everyone has data and lots of it. Therefore, every company is also an IT company. They have to be, otherwise how do they handle all of the information they have.

It is time for companies to understand that no matter what they do to make money – IT is a vital component of the organization. More and more emphasis is being put on data – from BIG DATA to IoT; information is the new landscape that is empowering, adding value and creating areas of risk.

There is a great deal of value in the data that companies have. It’s knowing what you have, who owns it and how it’s being used that is important. That is the role of the IT department in conjunction with business units.

Saying “we just sell hammers” is no longer the case – you sell hammers and you have data – know that and maximize the knowledge and you will be better for it.
