You know it happens, we know it happens – open permissions. For whatever reason, someone gives access to documents to everyone. Sure, it was only going to be temporary, then the coffee spilled, then a call came in, then…and now it is 6 months later and everyone can see something that maybe they shouldn’t have the ability to access. Excessive access is an issue; you need to have the ability to resolve it, but you have terabytes of unstructured data, who has the time, energy or skills to do that it in a reasonable amount of time – and where would you even start?
It all starts with an assessment – hey, maybe you don’t have a problem (bet you do, though); just knowing what you have is the first root explorer step in admitting there’s an issue. Can you, in a short period of time, assess your environment for open permissions and excessive access? Do you know what people are accessing? How much of your information is stale? Who owns the information? All reasonable questions that you should be able to answer.
